The seven-year itch

ViewHR has just turned seven and I’ve realised that it’s the time when I should be having my seven-year itch. Lucky for me, I love my team, our clients, and the work that we do, and the only itch is the one that pushes me to keep striving to improve and grow!

I find myself in an extremely lucky situation although it’s the Jonny Wilkinson type of luck – payback for hard work, determination, self-reflection, and seizing opportunities.

In 2015 my need to change the interactions between organisations and HR and Employment law drove me to change my situation. That coupled with my desire to be a dedicated and present mother to my two young sons led me to start the ViewHR journey.

Rather than making my first business journey easy, I bought a derelict house, project managed a 12-month house build, and built an office in its garden, while my husband worked away 12 weeks of the year and we raised two children at the same time. Nothing like having a purpose!

Running a business was complex but the elation of getting my first client was incredible and cemented what I was looking to achieve:

  • the offering of HR and employment support to businesses by highly skilled individuals
  • building strong relationships with clients to understand their business and their people
  • an exceptionally experienced HR and employment law consultancy that sets itself apart from others

We have grown by one person for every year we’ve been running. We could have taken different paths and grown more quickly but we are a very purposeful team, and all our actions are well thought through and if something doesn’t feel right, we trust our experience and gut. We are soon to be seven and that’s not to mention our growing pool of associate HR consultants and coaches that we have.

When I look back on what I have learned, it’s to be agile and to grab hold of great opportunities however scary they seem. If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t now have the amazing team that makes up ViewHR. Sarah and Heidi buying part of the business, a business that I had created, was a scary prospect but with every step, we take our team to better and brighter things. I am so proud of who we are and how we work.

I realise that running a business isn’t for everyone, and having done it, I now completely understand that saying. But I believe in what ViewHR is achieving and offering, and more importantly, I have a team that cares about our clients and business. So reflecting on the seven-year itch is an opportunity to thank my team, and remind myself of the amazing things we have achieved and have planned for the future within ViewHR!

Lastly and by no means at least, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our super clients, referrers, and go-to professionals. Without your loyalty and enthusiasm for what we do, we’d not have as much fun and surprises as we have had up to date.
